The BEST songs of 2014

Best of 14

I know you have been asking yourself for the past few weeks… WHERE is Rhea’s best of 2014 list? Ideally, this list SHOULD come out in December, but in year’s past, I have decided that I need to wait until the year is fully over to decide. Then, I take all the songs I have put on the list of contenders, and rack and stack them from a specially made spotify list. When I make my top 10, I tend to stray pretty far away from mainstream. However, this year, quite a few mainstream songs made it on this list.

As stated before, here are the criteria for making to my list:

1) How many times I listen to them.

2) How many memories they are linked to.

3) The videos

4) How happy they made me

If you want a refresher of the past lists, feel free to go down these walks down memory lane. Some of the vids may not still be linked (damn vimeo), but the titles and synopsis action of why they were chosen is still there.

2013 Looking back, still wondering about my #1 pick for this year. Looking back, I feel like it should have been behind Young and Beautiful. Well, that is what hindsight gets you. Now that I am SO over Frozen, I think that Young and Beautiful should have beat it. sigh.

2012 DUDE 2012 was one of the gilded years. Such good music. It was the year of the YouTube Porchtime playlist. (the number one from this year is STILL holding strong on my top song ever list and Mr. Ghetto’s Wal-Mart song is one of the best YouTube vids ever made.

2011 (Louder is still the best ever)

Without further ado, the top 10 for 2014:

10. No Mediocre – T.I. featuring Izzy Azalea (Explicit)

Real talk, this was probably the best effort by Iggy Azalea all year. She sold OUT on her album that went mainstream in 2014. I mean, we all sung to Black Widow and Fancy, no doubt, but this itty bitty hook in this song, and Ariana Grande’s Problem were her best efforts. SADLY. The days of Work are long gone. Anyhoo, we all know I love me some. T.I.

 9. Cro – Du

The first time I heard this song, I was cruising the kids to school along the B270 in Germany. These German rappers. They get me every time. Anyhoo, this song stayed on repeat, and is still a favorite workout song, and just overall feel good song. I wish more people in the States opened up their ears to more music around the world they don’t really understand, and they would get treated to gems like Cro.

8. Money on My Mind – Sam Smith

Another song that will ALWAYS remind me of Germany. Of course German radio caught on to Sam Smith British ways LONG before the states. When this song finally caught on, it had already been on my rotation for months. The rest of the album has proven to be the business, and his collaborations with Mary J. Blige later in the year were great.

7. Nobody to Love – Sigma

Uh huh hunnnni. This song came on my radar because it was mixed in with the Kim K./Kanye vid Bound2 vid that was made over by James Franco/Seth Rogen. Well, at the end of the day, the original song by Sigma is still everything to me, and one of my favorite songs of 2014.

For extra credit the Kim K/Kanye Bound (“Rock Forever 21, but just turned thir-tay”) (Explicit)

The James Franco/Seth Rogen parody that was one of the best things in 2014:

If you feel crazy and want to compare… you know you want to:

6. Lana Del Rey. Sigh. I feel like every year, I’ll have some Lana Del Rey on this list. That’s how much I love her. This year, it was a battle between West Coast and Once Upon a Dream. So, eff it. You get both, and I’m just doing a combo. Her music intoxicates me.

So, that being said, Maleficent was a great movie. lol (note for 2015, start a best movie list….)

5: Blank Space – Taylor Swift

Ahhhh, it’s about time you do something worthy of making it on to my top 10 list Taylor! See, I’ve always liked Taylor! Actually, I liked her better country, but FINALLY, you did something so freaking epic, you can be considered. Jam on that. This song is sharp in wit and lyrics, and the video is stunning! Kudos Taylor, you finally did it. People have been waiting for years for a great song like this. Seriously.

Lyrics worth being amazing:

So it’s gonna be forever
Or it’s gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it’s over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They’ll tell you I’m insane
Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game

Cherry lips
Crystal skies
I could show you incredible things
Stolen kisses, pretty lies
You’re the king baby I’m your queen

4. Hideaway – Kiesza

By June 2014, this song had already been in heavy rotation in Europe. One day, while driving down the road, along the coast in southern Spain, this song came on while we were on vacation and A was “oooh, ahhhh” in parody, and that’s the moment I knew not only would this song be the theme song of that vacation, it would always remind me of a time we wouldn’t get together as a family for a long time. I sang it. The kids sang it. A kept singing it. This song will forever remind me of sunny, long days at the beach. It will remind me of Estrella Damm. It will remind me of one of the best times, and places on earth. Therefore, it will rank #4 on this list and probably one of the best songs of all time.

3. Rather Be – Clean Bandit (Ft. Jesse Glynee)

Ah, here we go, another vacation song. This song was the official song of London 2014. We went there in April for Spring Break for five days. They used to play this song every morning on Cbebe’s on BBC kids in the hotel room. Anyway, anytime I hear this song, I think of that great trip, and how much fun it was. However, I’m the only one that thought so. A despised it. The kids were angry on it. It was one of our more grueling vacations. So much to do and see and not a lot of time for pubs and not a beach in sight.  But, what it DID solidify for me is that if I ever had a chance to be an expat anywhere, it would be London. YOLO!

2. Summer – Calvin Harris

Ah, Calvin Harris makes it back on the list. I don’t feel I have to do much explaining here. It’s amazing song, and one of those make or break songs with me. You like summer… roll with me. You don’t like summer. You are boring AF. For extra credit, this video rolled it officially into the #2 spot. We all know I love fast cars, pools, and beautiful people.

By now, you are on pins and needles for #1, or you may be impatient and not caring about 10-2. If you don’t care about 10-2, you don’t get this post. Go read them and stop being a slacker. Seriously. Don’t be that person that can’t do 10-2. It’s my life. lol

SOOOOO, #1:

Perdon – Camila

Haven’t heard it. Yeah, unless you watch Univision, or are knee deep in latin culture, you didn’t hear this. It wasn’t on the top 40 and repeated endlessly in restaurants, but it was CLEARLY one of the best songs of the year.

What does this song mean for me? Well, when we moved to Phoenix, times were really shaky. We didn’t have a place to live, we were homeless ya’ll. We needed to find a house STAT because A was going to Korea for a year. So, we stayed with A’s dad for a a few months to get situation and re-associate ourselves back to the States.

So, after being back in the USA for a month, A left and we needed to wait for our house to close and I stayed with GPa. While I have never been one to really shack up with anyone, he welcomed us into his home with open arms, created a room for the kids, and created a home without boundaries. In the meantime, I started watching a lot of Univision because it’s what he watches all day. Since one of my goals is to become 100% fluent in reading, speaking and talking Spanish (for when I retire to Spain ya’ll), I thought, hey, let me watch it all the time too. So, night after night, we’d watch Novelas together, and Primer Impacto and Gordo Y Flaca. I became addicted to the novela Malquerida. It was well done, well acted and well. SOAPY! Four months later it’s over, but I stuck with it even after I moved. The finale came on last week, and after we watched it, Gpa and I had the regroup at Sunday Morning Breakfast and talked about the bad guy getting set on fire! It was a lot! Anyway, our new novela is Que te perdone Dios. Anyway, this is the simple family life, and I like it. Gpa is my dad too, and he loves me, and I love him, and we together, we love Novelas.

Here’s my favorite version of this song. Enjoy. Here are the lyrics translated.

I hope you guys enjoyed. No real honorable mentions this year. There were some other great songs, but I really narrowed it down.

xoxoxo

Thanks for reading!
