The Best Music of 2013 – My Annual

2013-best-of

Hahaha. You thought you were going to get my annual “best of” music list sometime in December 2013, right? After it didn’t come in December, you thought, “SURELY, January is our month for sweet relief. Well, no. Sorry, boo. You get FEBRUARY 20 freakin’ 14!

I wish I had better reason other than I was really conflicted about my list. 2013 had some good ones for me, and it really came down to HOW do I rack and stack the best songs in my world from 2013. There’s a ton of Miley on here, and some dubious R.Kelly. Sigh. Let’s dig in.

If you are new to this list, go get caught up really fast on my recent 2012 and 2011 lists.

DISCLAIMER! Okay, this is MY list. There is no room for meaningless debate. I work on this for months. My list will never align with what everyone else loves, and it includes a lot of songs with dubious lyrics, and sketchy beats. I warned you! So, go grab a glass of *something* and enjoy, like I know you do every year for about a 1/2 hour. In mind, I always imagine people sitting there with a cup of coffee, wine or vodka reading the list, and watching each video. 🙂

Okay, first up…

#10: Do What You Want With My Body – Lady Gaga and R.Kelly

Ehhhhhhh, this song would probably be higher if not for the R.Kelly element. This dude. So, what came out?… the R.Kelley free version with someone even MORE fabulous, Christina Aguilera .Whoot Whoot.

Now, that being said, I still love the R.Kelly version, but feel totally dirty after I listen to it (because he’s Chris Brown Sketchy). It’s just the way it goes. Anyhoo, enjoy this gold lame soaked performance for all it is worth…

#9: Bodywork – Morgan Page Ft. Tegan and Sara

Ok, technically, this song debuted in late 2012, but I never heard it until 2013, so it’s on my 2013 list. WOW, I can’t even count how many times I have heard this song. And I mean, not even heard it, but BLARED it in my car. BLARED it in the Gym. BLARED it at home. I know all the words. I will NEVER tire of this song. The video is 900 shades of pure awesome. If you need to bust out some ab work, this is the song for you.

#8: Wrecking Ball – Miley Cyrus

Okay, video aside, this song is really a good song. Sure, she’s 1/2 naked the entire time, but really, the verse, “All I wanted was to break you off..all you did was wreeeeeecccck me…..” is pure gold.

#7 Klingande – Jubel

Save me. This song and video just make me SO happy. Also, you could NOT escape it on German radio. They will always pull me out of any dark mood. This is the song that will see me through my wine infused trip through Provence in a few months.

#6: Waiting All Night – Rudimental

WOW. This was an amazing song that I worked out to for months. It was also a favorite at home and in the car. I’ve loved it all year. Then, I finally saw the video as I was preparing for this post. I was pushed to tears. I CRIED a ton… but happy tears. Grab a hankie.

#5: More Miley

Okay, sooooo, 2013 was a kick butt year for Miley. She did her own music, and had some REALLY good collaborations.

I had a REALLY tough time ranking 23 and Feelin’ Myself, so I decided just to put them both at #5 and call it a day.

Sure, there are a bunch of rappers in these songs that I’m not naming, but who CARES! These songs were made by Miley.

First up, 23. OMG. Sometimes, I’ll hear a song, and I will KNOW that is deserves to be on the top 10. The first time I heard this song, I literally started twerking in my kitchen while loading the dishwasher, no lie people! Sometimes, early in the morning, I’ll just BLARE it to get going after drop off. This song keeps my hope alive that it’s only a matter of time before Gerard get a table in Vegas with some goose in some Js… and craft an 8 count on the dancefloor! Then, we head off to the Britney show… this is my dream night…

oooooh Feelin’ Myself came out in Nov 2013. GAH. This was something that messed up my list. Will.i.am and Miley. Meh. I’m feelin’ myself.

“I be everywhere… errrrybody know me”… Yesss, let’s do this!

Oooops, I caught you twerking! STOP! You have four more to go!

Okay, let’s slow it down.

#4 – Young and Beautiful – Lana Del Rey

Great Gatsby. F.Scott Fitzgerald. ’nuff said.

I first fell in love with this when I saw the movie, and I STILL feel that it is best viewed in the context of the movie:

I have an entirely different blog brewing for this amazing movie, but let it be known that this is one of my favorite scenes in any movie.

Here is the Lana Del Rey official video, which is also very beautiful.

#3 Dark Horse – Katy Perry

I don’t even know. The beat on this song is the absolute shit. I will never tire of it. EVER.

So you wanna play with magic, boy, you should know what you’re falling for….

#2 Team – Lorde

Yep, Royals didn’t make my list. I bet you were waiting for it. NOPE! Team made it. Out of all the songs on Lorde’s first album, this is the best, and one of the best of the year, if not the best five years or so…. This song will make my top 20 list of all time.

Dancin’ around the lies we tell….

“Team”

Wait ’til you’re announced
We’ve not yet lost all our graces
The hounds will stay in chains
Look upon your greatness
That you’ll send the call out
(Send the call out [15x])Call all the ladies out
They’re in their finery
A hundred jewels on throats
A hundred jewels between teeth
Now bring my boys in
Their skin in craters like the moon
The moon we love like a brother, while he glows through the roomDancin’ around the lies we tell
Dancin’ around big eyes as well
Even the comatose they don’t dance and tell[Chorus]
We live in cities you’ll never see on screen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Living in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know, we’re on each other’s teamI’m kind of over getting told to throw my hands up in the air, so there
So all the cups got broke shards beneath our feet but it wasn’t my fault
And everyone’s competing for a love they won’t receive
‘Cause what this palace wants is release[Chorus]
We live in cities you’ll never see on screen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Living in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know, we’re on each other’s teamI’m kind of over getting told to throw my hands up in the air
So there
I’m kinda older than I was when I revelled without a care
So there[Chorus]
We live in cities you’ll never see on screen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Living in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know, we’re on each other’s team
We’re on each other’s team
And you know, we’re on each other’s team
We’re on each other’s team
And you know, and you know, and you know

#1….. Drumrollllll

Drummmmroollllllllll

I think we can ALL agree that was number #1, right? Well, it doesn’t matter if you agree with me! This is my list, and this was BY FAR the best song. I’ll debate anyone into the ground about this ranking. 🙂
