Blog Hiatus Over… Here’s the 2016 recap

I know, you are reading this, and probably SHOCKED you are reading this. I took a long hiatus from this blog on purpose back in April 2016. I had a lot going on, and I really wanted to step away from this blog and plan a new direction and path for it. Well, 8 months later, I really have no new direction or path for it. It has to be what it is, and always has been, and that is simply a collection of thoughts that I have on different topics about which I am passionate.

I’ve had a regular blog since 2004. It was time for a break, but now it’s time to jump back in, and revitalize, and what better way than to catch everyone back up about 2016.

I don’t have a lot to say about 2016 other than it was a year that I had a lot of extreme personal growth. It was one of those years where I grew up a lot and become more of a grown up and an adult. Sad to say, I’m nearly 40, and still having to get to that point, but alas, here I am.

I created more personal boundaries for myself, my family, and my immediate world. I sought to enhance and grow my personal relationships, but also put a few relationships on the backburner that were no longer really growing. The key point of 2016 was to realize that there is a time, place and season for every thing and every person. Once you accept this ebb and flow of life, you will find the joy you have probably been missing.

In 2016, we picked up the travel bug again. It was the first time since coming back from overseas that we had the money and time to do so. It’s so much more difficult to travel in the United States. First, air fare is ridiculous. Second, driving is arduous. Third, it’s hard to accumulate enough time off to really do anything substantial. It was very limiting for so long, but in early 2016, I said I wanted to go to Hawaii, and so we saved, planned and saved some more and made it a reality. We also did some great mini trips to California and New Mexico and around Arizona. But, the big one was the Hawaii trip. It was always my missing travel spot for my WWII collection of memories, and I wanted the kids to have a really great travel vacation.

2016 was the first FULL year that the hubby (A) had been at home since 2009. From 2010-2015 he did two short tours of 12-15 months each and a deployment. So, it was something like, one year on, one year off, one year on, etc. That was another reason we were actually able to do some things. Who knows what 2017 will bring, but I do know that it was fantastic having my husband at home with me for a full calendar year.

I won’t talk about the election. I did enough venting about that on my FB page for months, and now I’m in a place where I can no longer entertain the tomfoolery. I can only focus on me, and know that my passport is at the ready should some shit ever go down.

So, 2017… I don’t have a lot of resolutions, because I knocked out a lot of stuff in 2016, but here’s a few:

  1. Travel at least once a month to somewhere new. This takes a lot of planning and now is the time to start. People always ask me how I pull off these elaborate getaways. I plan for months. So, I’m planning now for Hawaii in October again, and a cruise 12 months from now with some little trips in between. My hope is to make it back across the pond this year again. We shall see.
  2. Reduce our belongings and stop buying stuff. I know, I know. The minimalism trend that is going around. But, I’ve been on this bandwagon for the past year. I’ve reduced our houshold stuff by about 40-50%. A and I have been going around the house and tackling one thing at a time.
  3. Managing my freaking pantry. Good Lawd. Its’ my Achilles heel around here. Always a mess!
  4. Finally writing my Civil War curriculum. I’m still trying to write a civil war curriculum for kids that tells about little know facts and issues surrounding the war and reconstruction. I feel that if kids could fully understand this pivotal war a little better, they would be better equipped to deal with and handle the world of today. There is no other period in time that affected how we live now and how we still deal with social economic problems, racial problems, etc.
  5. Start my travel blog/web site. This has been a goal for 4 years ever since I came up with the name. This year, I start. No questions asked. I am holding myself accountable.

I wish you all a fantastic 2017!! May the good Lord bless and keep you and your family. May you find the peace and motivation to go into 2017 with a heart full of hope, and promise!

Until next time!
